September 2026 Textile Market: Peak Season Stalls, Raw Materials Diverge

China's cotton textile industry has entered its traditional September peak season, but the 132nd national market survey by the China Cotton Textile Industry Association reveals a market that is underperforming expectations. Raw material prices are diverging sharply: cotton is retreating while polyester and viscose are surging, creating a complex cost landscape for hotel linen buyers who source from China.

Cotton Retreats Below Key Threshold

After weeks of weather-driven rallies, cotton futures have reversed course. The benchmark Zheng cotton contract fell below the 17,000 yuan per ton mark, as profit-taking, continued state reserve cotton auctions, and expectations of new crop arrivals shifted market logic from supply-reduction speculation toward weak supply-demand reality. The China Cotton Price Index (3128B) settled at 18,171 yuan per ton on September 7, down 1.30 percent week-on-week, while cotton futures closed at 16,745 yuan per ton, declining 2.22 percent for the week. For hotel linen manufacturers, the cotton pullback offers a brief window to negotiate raw material costs before year-end production cycles intensify.

Polyester Surges on Geopolitical Shock

While cotton retreats, polyester staple fiber is moving aggressively higher. Renewed Middle East conflicts have disrupted crude oil supplies, pushing WTI crude to as high as 93.14 dollars per barrel. Polyester staple fiber followed crude and PTA prices upward, with the main futures contract peaking at 8,212 yuan per ton, up 495 yuan per ton in a single week. However, downstream acceptance remains low. Some factories warned that if raw material prices stay elevated after current inventories are consumed, they will cut production or suspend operations. For hotel linen buyers using cotton-polyester blends, this divergence means blended fabric costs may not decline even as pure cotton prices ease.

Viscose Staple Builds Upward Momentum

Viscose staple fiber continues its step-wise climb that began in June. Major producers raised quotes to 14,300 to 14,800 yuan per ton, with pre-sold orders plentiful and shipments tight. Low inventory and tight supply, combined with the cotton substitution effect, have emboldened producers to hold firm on pricing. The weekly chemical fiber price index edged up 0.12 percent to 101.42 points. Viscose is increasingly used in hotel towel and bathrobe manufacturing, where its softness and absorbency complement cotton. Buyers should expect viscose-blend product prices to remain firm through the fourth quarter.

Yarn Market: Price Increases Meet Buyer Resistance

Across the yarn market, spinning mills attempted modest price increases of approximately 200 yuan per ton for pure cotton yarn, but the market struggled to accept them. Downstream demand showed no significant improvement, and traders continued offering discounts to move inventory. The pure cotton yarn spot price was 25,100 yuan per ton on September 7, up only 0.90 percent for the week, far less than cotton's earlier surge. Vortex-spun polyester and viscose yarn prices firmed up, and colored yarn prices rose on raw material costs, but transactions remained dominated by small and short orders. The peak season's large orders that mills anticipated have simply not materialized.

At the fabric level, grey fabric mills reported slight improvement as autumn and winter orders gradually launched, but substantial bulk orders have yet to concentrate. Sustainable and eco-friendly fabric inquiries increased, reflecting growing hotel industry demand for certified textiles. The Keqiao textile grey fabric price index declined 0.79 percent weekly but remained up 2.68 percent monthly, indicating that the earlier cotton rally has been partially absorbed into fabric pricing. The Keqiao home textile price index was essentially flat at 99.86 points, confirming that hotel linen fabric prices have stabilized after summer volatility. Yarn-dyed fabric mills saw mid-count yarn prices rise about 350 yuan per ton, but fabric price gains were small, compressing mill margins further.

Denim Bucks the Trend

Denim fabric stood out as a bright spot. Domestic denim output rose approximately 5 percent month-on-month, with operating rates maintained at 95 percent and inventory levels falling to about 10 percent. Export volumes continued growing month-on-month. The 10-count OE cotton denim yarn price reached 15,030 yuan per ton, up 2.7 percent from mid-August. However, even denim mills noted that competitive pressures and raw material cost volatility kept overall profit margins thin. For hotel linen buyers sourcing heavy-weight utility textiles, this segment's resilience signals stable supply availability through the fourth quarter.

What Hotel Linen Buyers Should Do Now

The divergent raw material trends create both opportunity and risk. Cotton's retreat from its August peak offers a window to negotiate pure cotton sheet and towel pricing before the year-end rush. However, polyester and viscose surges mean that blended products, common in hotel bathrobes, towels, and mattress protectors, may see cost increases. Buyers should request updated fiber cost breakdowns from suppliers, separate cotton-content and synthetic-content line items in pricing discussions, and consider locking in cotton-heavy orders while cotton is in retreat. The Keqiao home textile index stability suggests that current hotel linen fabric prices are near a near-term equilibrium, making September a reasonable window for fourth-quarter procurement planning.

Peak Season Verification Still Pending

The 132nd survey's overarching message is caution. Across cotton, polyester, viscose, yarn, and fabric markets, the consistent theme is that September's traditional peak season has begun but its substance remains unverified. Mills report small, fragmented orders rather than the large, long-term commitments that define a robust peak season. Trade tensions, green trade barriers, and Southeast Asian competition continue to pressure Chinese exporters. For hotel linen buyers, this means suppliers are motivated to secure orders and may offer favorable terms, but the market's fragility also means lead times and quality consistency require careful monitoring. The next two to three weeks will be decisive in determining whether the peak season delivers or disappoints.
