China Cotton Prices Firm in July 2026: What Hotel Linen Buyers Need to Know

Chinese Cotton Market: Firm Prices in Off-Season
Entering July 2026, domestic cotton prices in China have remained steady-to-firm despite the traditional demand off-season. This resilience is driven by three converging factors that hotel linen procurement managers need to understand.
Factor 1: Xinjiang Heatwave Threatens New Crop
Cotton across Xinjiang has entered the critical flowering-to-boll-setting growth stage, which is decisive for final yields. A widespread heatwave hit the region again on July 11-12, bringing a second round of persistent extreme heat.
Maximum temperatures in the Southern Xinjiang Basin and Eastern Xinjiang are forecast above 40 degrees Celsius, with localized areas in Turpan and Hami potentially reaching 45 degrees or higher. In Northern Xinjiang plains, maximum temperatures could reach 39-41 degrees.
The optimal growing temperature for cotton during the flowering-boll stage is 28-30 degrees Celsius. When temperatures persistently exceed 33 degrees, damage symptoms begin. Above 35 degrees, severe heat damage occurs, leading to pollen inactivation, increased shedding of flowers and bolls, and reduced boll-setting rates.
Factor 2: Commercial Inventory Destocking
As of July 3, 2026, China's total commercial cotton inventories stood at 2.986 million tonnes, down 138,300 tonnes from the previous week, a decline of 4.43 percent. Xinjiang commercial cotton inventory was 1.814 million tonnes, down 6.69 percent week-on-week.
High-quality resources such as North Xinjiang's Double-29 (29mm staple length, 29g/tex strength) and Double-30 grades are becoming increasingly scarce. Domestic spot cotton supply is expected to remain tight until new-crop cotton hits the market in October.
Factor 3: Sino-US Agricultural Trade Progress
Recent Sino-US trade negotiations have yielded phased positive results. On July 2, China's Ministry of Commerce stated that both sides have agreed to include agricultural products under a reciprocal tariff reduction framework.
This brings favorable expectations for cotton industrial chain exports and adjusts previous pessimistic sentiment regarding weak market demand.
State Reserve Cotton Sales Begin
From July 20, China officially began releasing state reserve cotton, which adds short-term supply to the spot market. However, this is expected to only partially ease tightness, as the overall volume is limited relative to the supply gap.
What This Means for Hotel Linen Buyers
Short-term outlook (July-September 2026)
Cotton yarn prices will remain firm with a bullish bias
32-count pure cotton yarn prices are holding above 26,000 yuan per tonne
Textile mills face procurement pressure but are buying on-demand only
Expect stable to slightly higher hotel linen prices through Q3
Procurement recommendations
Lock in Q4 2026 orders now before the traditional textile peak season drives prices higher
Consider poly-cotton blends for budget-tier properties if pure cotton costs become prohibitive
Monitor the Xinjiang weather situation closely, as crop damage could trigger a price spike
Request updated quotes from suppliers before September, when peak season demand typically pushes prices up
Key Price Points to Watch
Cotlook A Index: Currently tracking above ICAC's projected range
Zhengzhou cotton futures (CF2609): Expected to trade in the 15,800-16,400 yuan per tonne range
32-count cotton yarn: Holding above 26,000 yuan per tonne, up nearly 20 percent from Q1
Conclusion
The Chinese cotton market is firm with a clear bullish bias. Hotel linen buyers should not expect price relief before October at the earliest. With state reserve sales providing only temporary relief, and the Xinjiang heatwave threatening new-crop yields, the smart move is to secure Q4 and early 2027 orders at current price levels.
